The Canandaigua girls basketball team rode the hot hand of Lia Zahn to a 49-37 win over Penfield in tonight's Class AA state tournament qualifying game at Gates Chili High School.

Zahn, a senior forward and older sister of star guard, Ashley Zahn, drilled five 3-pointers, including three in the first 10 minutes of the second half as the Braves pulled away. She scored all of her 15 points from beyond the arc, as the Patriots (22-2) focused on trying to limit Ashley, who finished with 19 points.

Canandaigua (23-1) will play Section VI champion, Lockport, in Saturday's 2 p.m. state tournament quarterfinals at Erie Community College's City Center in Buffalo. Among the losses for the Lions (20-3) this season is a 51-38 setback against Gates Chili, which finished 8-13.

Baily Knapton added 10 points off the bench for Canandaigua, including four baskets on offensive rebounds.

Canandaigua fell behind 4-0 but scored the next nine points and never trailed again. Lia Zahn's first 3-pointer with 3½ left in the first quarter put her team in front for good.

Penfield used a few different defenders on Ashley Zahn and doubled-teamed her much of the first half, but the rest of the Braves handled the ball well against pressure.
