Penfield girls basketball cruised to a 74-34 win over visiting Fairport on Friday.

Penfield (2-0) came out of the gate quick, going up 16-4 within the first four minutes. "We came out with a great energy and I think we rushed a little on offense but when we settled down it was great," Patriots coach Mark Vogt said. "Our starting five has 18 years total of varsity experience."

Fairport (1-1), which is coached by former Penfield basketball assistant Pat Muldowney, got within 14 in the second quarter but was never able to climb back into the game. "He was my assistant the last seven years so the girls wanted to come out and play well against him and his team," Vogt said.

Penfield's defense was the story, forcing turnovers and getting extra offensive possessions. "We like to pressure and force a quicker tempo, force kids to do things they don't like to do," said Vogt. "Everybody knows the pressure is coming, but you just don't know how exhausting it is mentally and physically."

Nyara Simmons was one of the catalysts early, defending the paint and recording her second double-double in a row with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Player of the game

Baylee Teal, Penfield: Teal led all scorers with 19 points. The point guard orchestrated the offense with a quick pace and found open lanes and teammates. She was also active on defense.

Play of the game

Senior Brianne Moxley, who is a fifth-year varsity player and will head to Queens College on a full scholarship, dribbled around her defender and went into the paint for a nice scoop layup to put Penfield up 49-24.

Unsung hero

Jasmine Cohoon came off the bench and hit three 3-pointers in two minutes to make a 19-point game into a 28-point game.

Top quote

"We have a lot of fire power, we can score in bunches. If we play defense well we can beat almost anybody," Vogt said.
